  • Enugu Diocese Unveils ‘Magro Rice’ from Mary Agro Farms, Udi: A Church-Backed Agricultural Breakthrough

In a significant stride toward food security, local production and economic empowerment, the Catholic Diocese of Enugu has unveiled its own locally produced rice brand—Magro Rice—under the agricultural initiative of Mary Agro Farms, Udi, spearheaded by the Auxiliary Bishop of Enugu, Most Rev. Ernest Obodo.

The presentation of the premium, destoned parboiled rice took place after the thanksgiving Mass marking the bishop’s priestly anniversary in Udi, where the first symbolic bag was officially handed over to Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

Magro Rice is positioned as a high-quality yet affordable brand, offering a viable alternative to costly imported varieties and aiming to stimulate healthy price competition in the local rice market. The product is the latest achievement of Mary Agro Farms, a diocesan initiative committed to promoting sustainable agriculture and economic justice.

Speaking on the project, Bishop Obodo emphasized the Church’s commitment to holistic human development. “This is not just about rice; it is about feeding our people, empowering communities, and reducing poverty,” he said. Bishop Obodo’s mission is in line with the Gospel mandate of Jesus to his disciples: “Give them something to eat yourselves” (Matt. 14:16).

Governor Mbah, visibly impressed, praised the Church’s forward-thinking approach. “Mary Agro Rice. Fantastic! So you have to take this (pointing to his aides). We want to start eating it.”  he remarked.

The launch of Magro Rice marks a bold Church’s intervention into Nigeria’s agricultural sector—combining faith, food production, and social impact in one mission-driven enterprise.
